Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between paragraph tags and line breaks?

Paragraph tags wrap each block of text in its own element with spacing around it. Line breaks simply move to the next line inside the same block. You can choose either, or both.

How do I convert a .txt file to HTML?

Click Open .txt file and pick the file, or drop it on the text field. It is converted straight away with the same options as pasted text. Files saved as UTF-8, as Unicode from Notepad or in the older Windows encoding all keep their accents and curly quotes.

What happens to my blank lines?

A blank line is what separates one paragraph from the next, so each block of text between blank lines becomes its own paragraph.

Why does my text come back as one long paragraph?

Line breaks on their own do not create paragraphs in HTML. Either tick paragraph tags, or put a blank line between the blocks before converting.

Can I paste the result straight into WordPress or an email?

Yes, into anything that accepts HTML: a WordPress code block, a CMS field, an email template or a newsletter builder.

Does it add anything besides paragraphs and breaks?

Only if you ask: you can turn web addresses into links and dash or numbered lines into lists. There is no wrapper, styling or class names, so the markup stays yours to style.

Does it escape special characters?

Yes. <, > and & are turned into entities automatically, so do not run the text through an encoder first. Going the other way, stripping Markdown down to plain text, is what Markdown to Plain Text is for.
