They stay. A letter is a letter, whether it is an e, an é or an ø. Tick Only A–Z and 0–9 if you need plain English letters, and é becomes e while letters with no plain version, such as ø and ß, are removed. If you want those turned into their nearest plain letter instead, Remove Accents does exactly that.
Copy the text out of Word, paste it here and copy the result back. Word's own Find and Replace can do it too, but you have to know which characters you are looking for, and the odd ones are usually the ones you cannot see.
