Frequently asked questions

How random are the generated passwords?

They are drawn from the browser's cryptographic random number generator, the same source used for security keys, rather than the ordinary random function used for things like shuffling a list.

How long should a password be?

Sixteen characters is a sensible floor for an account that matters, and longer is better. Length does more work than complexity: every extra character multiplies the number of possibilities.

Can I choose which character types are used?

Yes. Uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols can each be switched on or off, and you can require at least one of every kind you have ticked.

What does leaving out lookalikes do?

It drops the characters that are easy to confuse: capital I, lowercase l, the digit 1, capital O and zero. Worth ticking for a password you will have to read aloud or type by hand.

Should I use a different password for every account?

Yes. Reuse is what turns a single leaked password into several compromised accounts. A password manager is the practical way to handle that, and it will happily store a password this long.

Are symbols necessary if the password is long enough?

Less than people think. A long passphrase of ordinary characters can be harder to crack than a short one full of symbols, and some systems still reject certain symbols outright.
